Buddy Program

Buddies are the secret sauce to our programs, and oftentimes, lifelong friendships are made

Buddies protect and assist athletes in batting, fielding, running the bases (if needed) and are a friend on and off the field. Most importantly, Buddies help the athletes focus on their abilities and having a positive experience.

The Buddy program has great impact on all participants. Buddies and players learn valuable skills like patience, understanding and compassion. Buddies partner with a player’s Coach or parents to ensure the specific needs of the athlete are met on the field.

We need Buddies for every game!

Buddies must be 12 years of age and older, adults are welcome!
Volunteering on a regular basis and being a Buddy for a particular athlete allows both the athlete, volunteer and athlete’s parents/caregivers an opportunity to really get the most out of the program. Part-time Buddies are welcome too!
Buddies are responsible to communicate their availability with the Coach, Volunteer Coordinator or directly with an athlete’s parents.
To apply to be a Buddy, you must register each season. If you are over 18, you must also complete a background check.
Buddies need to be energetic and enthusiastic with the goal of providing a safe and positive and enjoyable experience for all.
Buddies are a player’s biggest supporter on and off the field. We encourage Buddies to keep a consistent schedule. This allows for the athletes to grow more comfortable with their new friends.
On game days:
Safety is always a priority. Buddies are expected to protect the player at all times.
Assist the players according to their needs, focusing on enabling each athlete’s abilities.
Run around the bases with the player or provide appropriate assistance (example, if player is in a wheelchair, push them around the bases).
Please try to notify the Coach, Volunteer Coordinator or player’s parents at least 24 hours prior to game time if unable to attend.
Demonstrate high morals and integrity on and off the field.
Have fun with the player and enjoy the game!
In order to encourage friendships and establish a level of comfort, staying with the same athlete or team for the entire season is recommended but not required.
We also have local sports teams volunteer on an annual basis for 1-2 games per season.
New Buddies will attend a brief training before the season starts. This training provides guidelines, suggestions, and directions on how to have fun and make the experience safe and enjoyable.
The Miracle League provides opportunities for volunteers to earn LINCS hours. If you are tracking hours for this, please check with Mary Camp on how to follow the process.

Our players love having teams and groups come out to volunteer. Teams fill in any gaps we have providing necessary coverage for athletes. Additionally, we welcome guest coaches, 1st and 3rd base coaches, fetching foul balls and working 1 on 1 drills in the outfield during games.
We can also schedule a “scrimmage” game with the older athletes where the team members play with modified rules. Our Miracle League athletes love competition and some smack talking too!

Buddies who sign up for the season will receive a shirt to wear during games. Teams should wear their uniform tops and hats.
No cleats are allowed on the field so wear sneakers. Bring your glove, some water and your positivity!
